What Is Music Clipping and Content Seeding?

By Touré, COO of Feed the Family Entertainment · 3 min read

Songs break on short-form video now. Clipping and content seeding are the two strategies behind most of the songs you hear everywhere at once. They're related, but they're not the same thing.

Clipping: volume

Clipping takes your videos and audio and spreads them across the internet at a scale one person could never reach alone. A network of clippers posts cuts of your music videos, interviews, live shows, and studio moments across their own accounts and pages.

Clipping is the sheer spread of your content across social media.

Content seeding: placement

Content seeding integrates your music into the places your listeners already spend time. Your song shows up as the audio on popular memes, on meme pages, and on theme pages that fit your sound.

Seeding is meeting the listener at every point where they consume media.

Where UGC and audio heating fit in

User-generated content (UGC) is the main way clipping shows up in the wild: real people making their own videos with your song. When thousands of people use your song as the audio on their posts, the sound "heats up," and the platforms start pushing it to even more people.

Burst or build: how budget shapes the result

Depending on your budget and goals, a campaign can go two ways:

  • Burst. Concentrate the budget into a short window for a big spike of growth and virality around a release.
  • Build. Spread it out over time so your music keeps showing up at varying intensities as it grows. Over time, you start to feel like you naturally belong in people's feeds, and in their heads.

Neither is better. It depends on whether you need a moment or a movement.
